Class leaders: Margie Veatch and Renee Walston
Whether it is a goal of your student to compete in a tournament or just to become a more confident and polished speaker, our club time will help you reach your goals. Additionally, as believers, we are called to share the Truth in thought, word, and deed. Our goal with our club is to develop thoughtful, logical, and gracious speakers of the truth in whatever situations lie ahead.
One resource we will be using is the book, Rhetoric Alive! Principles of Persuasion Book 1 by Alyssan Barnes. It is not a requirement to own this book to participate in club.
Every activity that we do in our club is designed to help polish and refine our speaking skills.
While homework may be sent via email, please note that assignments are given for extra practice. Speaking regularly is the best way to improve!
We will learn about the three different categories of speech events available at speech and debate tournaments. Interpretive, Limited Preparation, and Platform speeches will each be addressed. Students will be expected to complete work on their individual speeches at home. Time will be available to help students refine their speeches in preparation for tournaments.
Students should bring:
pen or pencil
a notebook or folder with paper for taking notes and collecting handouts
a journal or card box for collecting interesting and inspiring quotes and speech ideas. Students should choose the option that most appeals to them.
A Stoa membership is also required for those planning to participate in a tournament.
